Technology and Pedagogy

I chose the lesson plan:
http://www.musictechteacher.com/music_lessons/garrett_music_tech_lesson_05_06_treble_notes.htm
because it has a clear and concise concept and the means to perform such a task is easily displayed and laid out orderly.
In the lesson plan the students would be using a music software known as Sibelius that aids in the learning of music notation, so I believe the lesson plan falls into the groove of the CCCS. I think there aren't any gaps or holes in the plan.
It is not 100% crucial to have this technology in order to understand the material that the lesson consists of, however it only reinforces the goals more. Without Sibelius the students can simply write on a piece of paper and learn with paper and pencil, but the fact that there is a alternative like Sibelius it allows students to learn on their own and in their own time as well.

  1. Hi, Dan

Your description of the Sibelius software sounds like the music program Finale, which I used to work with in Music Theory courses in high school. While students can learn music without using programs like this, they certainly can help the student. It can be a great aide to the student.

  2. This is a great lesson plan especially for this class. Having more recent technology interact with instruments is a great idea. It is important that students realize that instruments are technology and they can work with computers and what not. As music is considered an art because of the artistic input it is sort of like math, at least in my eyes. Reading notes and what not is very confusing to me but, I do believe this lesson plan would be helpful to understanding music at a higher level.

  3. I really like that you made the observation that it is not essential to have Sibelius in order to teach the content of the lesson, but that it aids in the learning process. It is very important to no rely on technology in the classroom but rather us it to assist with the lesson.
